Islands Post-Isolation

This volume of the Finding Home Bahamas Magazine is documenting the experience of everyday Bahamians since the country reopened its borders to travelers and all business activities resumed in 2021. The Post-Isolation project collected stories, thoughts, and feelings of being free from the isolation brought on by the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns in The Bahamas. These experiences were collected between August and December 2021. The 2021 magazine also features the Pandemic in Paradise project by the Heritage Partners, which documents the Bahamian experience of 2020.

The contributions are shared in the 2021 Finding Home Magazine. The collection is saved and archived with Finding Home Bahamas and the University of The Bahamas Special Collections for future reference and educational use.

Finding Home has conducted genealogy research for both local and international individuals and companies. Some of which have included ancestry tracing for American celebrities of Bahamian descent.

History of the Royal Victoria Hotel Site

Finding Home Bahamas had the privilege of conducting research into the history of the Royal Victoria Hotel site and surrounding area for the Central Bank of The Bahamas’ relocation project. The relocation of the Central Bank of The Bahamas’ offices to the former Royal Victoria site is a major undertaking and one that is being conducted in a culturally sensitive manner. We appreciate that an institution of this magnitude would give careful consideration to the historical and cultural significance of its chosen location, the impact of its actions, and thoughtfully integrate the subjects into its development plans. The new Central Bank of The Bahamas facility is proposed to be a cultural hub and include a museum, art gallery, and movie theater.

Swan Song of the Flamingo

This multi-disciplinary project entitled “The Swan Song of the Flamingo” was the brainchild of internationally renowned Bahamian artist, Kishan Monroe. Monroe sought to bring light to the little known or understood armed conflict that took place in Bahamian waters on May 10th, 1980, and to commemorate the brave young men who lost their lives in the sinking of the HMBS Flamingo.

“The Swan Song of the Flamingo” opened at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas in November 2013. Backed by research conducted by Finding Home Bahamas, the project presented paintings, photography, audio, dance, and literature. At local archives, newspapers and court proceedings were searched to inspire memory and analysis of the incident and the events that followed.
